Logic Problem Solution:
The New Flag
The four finalists in the Wisdom Islands flag design competition are
listed in clue 4: Mary, Robert, the person who submitted the Clasped
Hands, and the one who used a blue background. Mr. Marshall (8)
didn't design the Clasped Hands flag (6), so in clue 4, he is
either Robert or chose a blue background for his submission. If
Mr. Marshall had chosen the blue background, he would be Andrew.
Marshall didn't design the Star flag (8), and Andrew didn't use
the Outrigger as the nation's symbol on his (9). So, Andrew
Marshall would have designed the Dolphin flag--a contradiction,
since Pitcairn submitted the entry with the Dolphin on it (2).
Therefore, Mr. Marshall is Robert. He didn't use the Dolphin (2)
or Star (8) on his flag; Robert Marshall chose the Outrigger as
his emblem. Pitcairn incorporated a Dolphin on the flag (2) and
is thus either Mary or used the blue background. If Pitcairn were
Mary, the blue flag would have been submitted by Easter (7)--no
(3). Pitcairn's Dolphin is on a blue background. Mary's flag
has a Star on it. By clue 5, Clara picked the Clasped Hands for
her flag, and Andrew is Pitcairn. By clue 1, the winning flag
has a red background and isn't Clara's; nor is it Robert Marshall's
Outrigger design (9). Mary won with a Star on red background.
Easter's flag has a black background (3), so Easter must be Clara.
By elimination, Mary is Solomon, and Robert's flag has a yellow
background. The four finalists in the Wisdom Islands flag design
are
- Mary Solomon, Star on red, winner
- Clara Easter, Clasped Hands on black
- Andrew Pitcairn, Dolphin on blue
- Robert Marshall, Outrigger on yellow
