Logic Problem Solution:
Driver's Tests
By clue 6, Christy failed her driver's test right before Gear
failed. By clue 11, Christy isn't Lane or Walker. So, Christy
is either Turner or Parker. If Christy were Parker, by clues
6 and 9, the person who failed for not looking before pulling
into the passing lane would have gone immediately ahead of
Christy Parker, who would have immediately preceded Gear in the
test. By clue 3, Tony, Turner, and the person who failed for
driving too slowly failed their driver's tests in consecutive
order. Tony isn't Gear (10), and Turner isn't the one who failed
to check before pulling into the passing lane (5). There is thus
no way for clue 3 to work if Christy were Parker because there
would be six examinees among clues 3, 6, and 9. Christy is Turner.
Combining clues 3 and 6, then, Tony was followed by Christy Turner
and then Gear, who failed for going too slowly. By clue 8, Joel
immediately preceded Lisa at the test. Joel didn't fail for
driving too slowly (1), so he and Lisa are the fourth and fifth
driver's test takers to the three already named. Then Abigail
is Gear. If Joel and Lisa had gone 4th and 5th, by clue 9, Joel
would have failed for not looking before passing, and Lisa would
be Parker--no (2). So, Joel was 1st to take his test followed
by Lisa 2nd (8), with Tony, Christy, and Abigail then following
3rd, 4th, and 5th. Since Lisa isn't Parker (2), by clue 9, Lisa
failed for passing without looking, and Tony is Parker. Lisa
is Walker, and Tony failed for backing over the curb in the
parking test (4). Joel is Lane. He failed for making a right turn
on red without stopping (7). Christy failed her driver's test
for not signaling a left turn. Mr. Plate failed his first five
examinees in order
- 1st - Joel Lane, right turn on red without stop
- 2nd - Lisa Walker, pulled out to pass without looking
- 3rd - Tony Parker, backed over the curb while parking
- 4th - Christy Turner, failed to signal a left turn
- 5th - Abigail Gear, drove too slowly on Parkway
