Logic Problem Solution:
At the Rock & Roll B & B
From the introduction, there are four rooms on each of
floors 2 and 3; the front of the B & B faces Lake Haley
and the back faces Comets Ridge; and, facing the front
entrance, the room to the left is 2A, with 2B, 2C, and
2D then going counter-clockwise from 2A. Room 3A is
above 2A, etc.; and room 2A is adjacent to 2B and 2D but
not to 2C, 2B adjoins 2A and 2C but not 2D, etc. By clue
1, Dotty and her husband stayed in the bedroom directly
above that of Keith and his wife, while the Reddings
had the room directly above the Fats Domino
bedroom. Francine isn't Mrs. Redding (11); in clue 17,
therefore, Francine and her husband stayed in the third
bedroom on the 3rd floor, directly above Ralph and his
wife. Neither Francine (17) nor Dotty (22) had the Buddy
Holly bedroom. Since the Wilsons didn't stay in the
Fats Domino room (13), by clues 1 and 17, the Reddings
didn't have the Buddy Holly bedroom. The fourth
couple to the three already named stayed in the Buddy
Holly room on the 3rd floor, directly above Mr. & Mrs.
Wilson (17). By clue 7, the Underwoods stayed in the
Little Richard room. Keith isn't Mr. Underwood (16),
nor is Ralph (25). Dotty and her husband didn't stay in
the Little Richard bedroom (22). Francine Underwood
and her husband enjoyed tutti frutti in the Little
Richard room. By clue 2, Larry isn't Wilson; and, by
clue 8, Larry and his wife didn't stay in the Fats
Domino bedroom. Therefore, Larry and his wife had a
room on the 3rd floor. Similarly, Pete isn't Wilson (2)
and didn't have the Fats Domino room (18), so Pete
and his wife stayed on the 3rd floor. By clue 4, the
Elvis Presley room is flanked by the rooms in which
Ellen and her husband and Larry and his wife stayed--thus
on the 3rd floor. Pete isn't Ellen's spouse (9), and Pete
and his wife didn't stay in the Elvis Presley bedroom
(18); therefore, since Pete is on the 3rd floor, in clue 4,
he and his wife must have stayed in the room diagonally
across the hall from the Elvis Presley room. By
clue 12, Pete and his wife had one of the front rooms facing
Lake Haley, and Mr. & Mrs. Saunders had the adjoining room
to Pete's at the back of the B & B facing Comets Ridge.
Since Larry isn't Saunders (8), in clue 4, Ellen must be
Saunders, since Pete's room must adjoin both Larry's and
Ellen's and be diagonal from the Elvis Presley room.
Ellen Saunders and her husband didn't stay in room 3D (19);
they had 3C. Pete and his wife were in 3B (12), Larry and
his were in 3A, and the Elvis Presley bedroom is 3D (4).
By clue 20, Larry isn't Francine's husband. Since Francine
Underwood and her husband stayed in the Little Richard
room, he must be Pete. Then Ralph and his wife were in
2B (17). By clue 10, Larry and his wife aren't the Reddings,
who then stayed in the Elvis Presley bedroom--directly
above room 2D, the Fats Domino room (1). In clues
1 and 17, then, Dotty is Larry's wife, and the Saunders
were in the Buddy Holly bedroom; Keith and his wife
stayed in 2A (1), and the Wilsons were in 2C (17). By clue
5, Larry and Dotty were in the Roy Orbison bedroom,
3A, and Keith is Mr. Valens. By clue 3, the Quinns stayed
on the 2nd floor. They didn't stay in the Fats Domino
room (13), so they are Ralph and his wife. By clue 14, the
Yardleys were on the 2nd floor--in the Fats Domino
room, 2D--and Dotty and Larry are the Trumans. By clues
14 and 21, the Rick Nelson room is 2A. By clue 3,
Glenda is Mrs. Yardley, and the Wilsons were in the Jerry
Lee Lewis room. By elimination, 2B is the Sam
Cooke bedroom. Then Marty is Wilson (15). By clue 23,
Betty is Mrs. Wilson and Ike Mr. Saunders. Nick and Cheryl
must be the Reddings (6). By elimination, Jeff is Yardley.
Harriet is Mrs. Quinn and Alice Mrs. Valens (24). The
eight couples stayed at the Rock & Roll B & B last weekend
as follows:
- 2A - Rick Nelson room, Keith & Alice Valens
- 2B - Sam Cooke room, Ralph & Harriet Quinn
- 2C - Jerry Lee Lewis room, Marty & Betty Wilson
- 2D - Fats Domino room, Jeff & Glenda Yardley
- 3A - Roy Orbison room, Larry & Dotty Truman
- 3B - LittleRichard room, Pete & Francine Underwood
- 3C - Buddy Holly room, Ike & Ellen Saunders
- 3D - Elvis Presley room, Nick & Cheryl Redding
