Spring Training: The Pitchers
by Randall L. Whipkey
Sutton and four other young pitching prospects have been invited to
spring training with the major league Summerset Swatters. Each of
the five, including Will, spent last season with one of the Swatters'
minor league clubs at either the AAA, AA, or A level; one pitched for
Fredericksburg in the Battlefield League. Given the statistics about
the rookies below, you should be able to field each player's full
name, whether he is a righthander (RHP) or lefthander (LHP), and the
farm team for which he played the 2000 season.
- Baseball America rates Ford, who isn't the one who spent
last season with Hamilton, as the Swatters' best minor-league
pitching prospect.
- Tom played the 2000 season for Main Island, which isn't an AAA
league club.
- Andy and the rookie who pitched last year for Silver City,
which isn't at the A level, both played college baseball for
Stanford University.
- Wynn's chances of making the final major league roster are
regarded as slim because he pitched below the top AAA level
in the minors last year.
- Pete, a righthander, was with an A league team in 2000; he
didn't play for the Hamilton farm club.
- John is one of the two lefthanders among the five prospects.
- RHP Palmer, who isn't Andy, is one of the two training camp
invitees who pitched for AA teams last season.
- The five candidates for the Swatters' bullpen are Andy, Young,
the one who played for Low Plains in 2000, one of the two
prospects who spent last season with an AAA farm team, and a
lefthanded pitcher.
