Logic Problem Solution:
The Future According to Madame Rhue
The five friends are listed in clue 5: Lisa, Miss Trowbridge,
the one who asked if her Jefferson High team would win the
state championship in basketball, the girl who asked if she
could be Prom Queen in May, and one of the two
who received "No" answers from Madame Rhue. By clue 1, both
the senior who asked if she would get a 5 on the AP Calculus
exam and the one who asked if she was going to attend Stanford
University got "Yes" responses from the crystal ball. In clue
5, then, the two in clue 1 must be Lisa and Miss Trowbridge in
some order. The one who got a "No" answer in clue 5 thus
asked if she would rise to the rank of Admiral. By clue 9,
Kari got a positive response from Madame Rhue but isn't Miss
Trowbridge; she got the third "Yes" to the ones received by
Lisa and Miss Trowbridge and therefore didn't ask about the
AP exam or attending Stanford. Kari also didn't ask the
question about winning the basketball championship (2), so
she asked Madame Rhue if she could be Prom Queen. The girl
who asked about being on the state championship team got the
second "No." By clue 7, she must be Miss Sanders-Scott. By
clue 8, Miss Usherwood asked the crystal ball whether she
would become an Admiral. Jana is Miss Trowbridge (3). Jana
asked whether she would be attending Standford (10), so Lisa
inquired re her AP Calculus score. Lisa is Walsh and Kari
Valley (6). Marcy is basketball-player Sanders-Scott and
Heidi is going to the Naval Academy in Annapolis (4). The
five asked questions of and received answers from Madame
Rhue and her crystal ball as follows:
- Jana Trowbridge, "Will I be attending Stanford University next fall?", YES
- Kari Valley, "Do I have a really good chance of being Prom Queen?", YES
- Lisa Walsh, "Will I get a 5 on the AP Calculus exam?", YES
- Heidi Usherwood, "Will I be an Admiral some day?", NO
- Marcy Sanders-Scott, "Will the Jefferson High girls basketball team win the state championship?", NO
