Logic Problem Solution:
The Summerset Sluggettes
By clue 2, three consecutive batters first to last in the Sluggettes
batting order are Emily, the Williams girl, and the catcher. By clue
13, three consecutive batters in the order are the Peters girl, the
left fielder, and Grace. Either six different players are named or
there is some overlap between the clues. By clue 7, Grace isn't the
Williams girl; and by clue 8, the Peters girl isn't the team catcher.
Therefore, the only way the clues can overlap is completely, so that
the Williams girl would be the left fielder. The Williams girl isn't
Molly (14). In clue 9, therefore, where the three outfielders are
given, the Williams girl would bat 7th, and Grace then would hit 8th
(13)--a conflict with clue 7. So, there is no overlap between clues 2
and 13, and six different Sluggettes are named in the two clues.
Since the Williams girl doesn't bat 8th in the order (7), the three in
clue 2 don't hit 7-8-9. Since the catcher doesn't bat 8th (15), the
three in clue 2 don't hit 6-7-8. Since one of the outfielders bats
7th (9) and the catcher thus doesn't, the three in clue 2 don't hit
5-6-7. They bat consecutively somewhere from 1st-6th. If the Peters
girl were the 7th batter, she would be an outfielder (9) and would
bat just ahead of the left fielder (13). No two outfielders follow
each other in the batting order (16), however, so the three in clue 13
don't hit 7-8-9. Since Grace doesn't bat 8th (7), the three in clue
13 don't bat 6-7-8. If Grace were 7th and thus an outfielder (9), she
and the LF would bat consecutively, contradicting clue 16. So, like
the three Sluggettes in clue 2, the three Sluggettes named in clue 13
bat consecutively somewhere from 1st-6th. Since there is no overlap
between the two clues, the three in one clue must bat 1st-3rd and the
three in the other clue 4th-6th. If the three in clue 2 were 1st-3rd,
the first six hitters would be Emily, the Williams girl, the catcher,
the Peters girl, the left fielder, and Grace in order. Either the
center fielder or the right fielder bats 7th (9). Since the Upton
girl doesn't play the outfield or catch (4), by clue 10, she would bat
9th and the third baseman 8th. By clue 1, the Owens girl bats just
ahead of the center fielder in the order. Since the Williams girl
isn't Molly (14) and thus isn't an outfielder in clue 9, the Owens
girl couldn't hit 1st. Since the left fielder would bat 5th in this
arrangement of clues 2 and 13, the center fielder couldn't hit 4th
or 6th (16), so the Owens girl couldn't hit 3rd or 5th. The Owens
girl isn't Grace and doesn't play third base (3) and thus couldn't bat
6th or 8th. Since the third baseman would hit 8th in this arrangement,
the center fielder couldn't and the Owens girl couldn't bat 7th. There
is therefore no way for the clue 2 followed by clue 13 ordering to
work. The first seven Sluggette batters in order are the Peters girl,
the left fielder, Grace (13), Emily, the Williams girl, the catcher
(2), and either the center or right fielder (9). By clue 1, the Owens
girl bats immediately ahead of the center fielder. The center fielder
doesn't hit 3rd, right after the left fielder (16). If the center
fielder were Emily, batting 4th, Emily would be the Scott girl in clue
9--no (6). If the center fielder were the Williams girl, the Williams
girl would be Molly in clue 9--no (14). The Owens girl isn't the
catcher (15). Since no two outfielders bat in order (16), the center
fielder can't bat 8th, after the right fielder. The center fielder
hits 9th and the Owens girl 8th in the Sluggettes lineup. The 7th
batter is then the right fielder. By clue 10, the third baseman bats
immediately ahead of the Upton girl in the order. Since the Upton girl
doesn't play catcher or the outfield (4), she must be Emily, and Grace
plays third base. By clue 17, Faith is the right fielder, and the Owens
girl is the team's second baseman. By clue 5, the Raymond girl must be
Faith and Dina Owens. The shortstop is the lead-off hitter, the
Peters girl, and the Thomas girl bats 2nd (11). The pitcher bats 5th
(12); and, by elimination, the first baseman 4th. By clue 9, the Scott
girl is the center fielder and Molly left fielder Thomas. The Quinn
girl is at third base and the Vincent girl at catcher (8). By clue 18,
Jen bats 5th and Chyna 6th. Heather leads off and Kayla bats 9th (19).
The Summerset Sluggettes batting and fielding line-up are
- 1 - Heather Peters, shortstop
- 2 - Molly Thomas, left field
- 3 - Grace Quinn, third base
- 4 - Emily Upton, first base
- 5 - Jen Williams, pitcher
- 6 - Chyna Vincent, catcher
- 7 - Faith Raymond, right field
- 8 - Dina Owens, second base
- 9 - Kayla Scott, center field
